Coconut oil is emollient and highly nourishing.
Latin Name: Ricinus communis
Coconut oil is a fractionated oil that is a white, solid, crystalline, highly saturated fat melting at around 25ºC. When coconut oil is fractionated, a clear liquid results. Coconut oil is often used for pessaries and suppositories because it softens and melts at body temperature.
The oil can cause blackheads if over used but is beneficial for very dry skin or dry hair. The oils aids tanning but is not a sun filter. Research shows that coconut oil boosts the body’s metabolism, raises body temperature, and helps provide greater energy which can lead to weight loss. The oil is frequently used in massage creams because of its emollient properties.
It lasts for more than 3 years if kept in a cool place.
